Then I woke up and thought, wait, why does my brain DO that? So I asked my dad, and we went digging into the science. And I found out something I did not expect: even the smartest sleep scientists in the world do not fully agree on the answer yet. Let me show you what they DO know, and what is still a mystery.

First, What Actually Happens When You Sleep

Sleeping is not like switching off a light. Your brain stays busy all night, cycling through different stages over and over.

The stage where the most vivid dreams happen is called REM sleep. REM stands for Rapid Eye Movement, because during this stage your closed eyes flick back and forth quickly under your eyelids. Scientists discovered this in the 1950s, and it changed sleep research forever.

That last one is important. Your body basically switches off most of your movement during REM sleep. Scientists think this is a safety feature so you do not physically act out whatever is happening in your dream. Your brain is running the adventure, but your body stays parked in bed.

Scientists have been studying dreams seriously for over 70 years, and they still do not have one agreed answer for why dreams exist. There are several leading ideas, each with real evidence behind it, and researchers genuinely disagree about which is right.

When scientists have several competing explanations and not enough evidence to settle it, that is not a failure. That is what the edge of knowledge looks like. Every big discovery started at exactly this stage.

Let me walk you through the main ideas.

Idea 1: Dreams Help Sort Your Memories

This is probably the most popular idea among scientists today. While you sleep, your brain seems to replay and reorganise things that happened during the day, filing away what matters and letting go of what does not.

Researchers have watched brain activity in sleeping animals and seen the same patterns of brain cells firing that fired while the animal was learning something earlier. It genuinely looks like the brain is practising or reviewing.

Some studies have found that people who dream about a task they just learned do better at it the next day than people who did not dream about it.

But here is the honest part: other studies have found that only a small fraction of dreams clearly connect to things a person just learned. And some people who take certain medicines get almost no REM sleep at all, yet their memory still works fine. So the memory idea is promising but not proven.

Idea 2: Dreams Help You Process Feelings

Dreams are often packed with emotion, much more than ordinary thinking. Fear, excitement, embarrassment, joy, worry.

During REM sleep, the emotional parts of your brain become very active while the logical, planning parts quiet down. Some researchers think this lets your brain revisit things that upset or excited you, but in a safer setting, sort of taking the sharp edge off a difficult feeling overnight.

This might be part of why a problem that felt overwhelming at bedtime often feels a bit more manageable in the morning. Adults sometimes say "sleep on it" for exactly this reason.

Idea 3: Dreams Are Practice for Real Life

Another idea is that dreams work like a training simulator. A lot of dreams involve challenges, being chased, solving something, dealing with people, getting somewhere.

The thinking goes that your brain gets to rehearse tricky situations while your body is completely safe in bed. It is a bit like how pilots train in flight simulators before flying a real plane.

Idea 4: Dreams Are Your Brain Making Sense of Noise

This one is different and a bit humbling. Some scientists proposed that during REM sleep, a lower part of your brain fires off fairly random signals. The upper thinking part of your brain, which absolutely hates things not making sense, receives that jumble and desperately tries to build a story out of it.

In this view, dreams are your brain being an excellent storyteller with terrible raw material. That would explain why dreams jump around so wildly and why impossible things feel normal inside them.

Not everyone accepts this idea, because many dreams do contain meaningful pieces of real life rather than pure randomness. But it might explain part of what is going on.

Why Are Dreams So Weird?

Here is my favourite thing I learned. During REM sleep, a region at the front of your brain called the prefrontal cortex becomes much less active. That region is your inner fact-checker, the part that thinks "hang on, that is not possible."

With your fact-checker basically off duty, nothing seems strange. Your house has a room you have never seen? Sure. Your dog is talking? Makes sense. You are late for a test in a school you have never attended? Totally reasonable.

Then you wake up, the prefrontal cortex comes back online, and you go "wait, WHAT was that?"

Why Do We Forget Dreams So Fast?

You have probably had a dream that felt incredibly detailed, then lost almost all of it within a minute of getting up. Frustrating!

Scientists think the brain chemicals needed to lock a memory into long-term storage are at low levels during REM sleep. So dreams are a bit like writing on a foggy window. Vivid at the time, gone very quickly.

If you want to remember more of your dreams, try keeping a notebook by your bed and writing down anything you can recall the second you wake up, before you get up or check anything. People who do this consistently usually start recalling more.

Almost everybody dreams every single night, several times. People who say they never dream are almost always just not remembering them.

Do Animals Dream?

Almost certainly yes, at least some of them. Many mammals and birds show REM sleep just like we do.

If you have a dog, you may have watched its paws twitch and heard little muffled woofs while it sleeps. Researchers studying rats found that brain-cell patterns recorded while the rats ran a maze replayed during their sleep, closely enough that scientists could tell roughly where in the maze the rat was "running."

We cannot ask an animal what it dreamed about, so we cannot know the content. But the brain activity strongly suggests something dreamlike is happening.

What About Bad Dreams?

Everybody has scary dreams sometimes. They are completely normal and every single person gets them, including grown-ups.

Bad dreams often show up when you have been worried, overtired, or something upsetting happened. They are not warnings and they are not predictions. They are just your brain churning through feelings.

Things that genuinely help: keeping a steady bedtime, winding down calmly before sleep instead of watching something intense, and telling a parent or trusted grown-up about a dream that bothered you. Saying it out loud in daylight takes a surprising amount of the scariness away.

If bad dreams are happening a lot and making you not want to sleep, that is worth telling a parent about so they can help.

Why I Like That Nobody Has the Full Answer

When I started this article I assumed I would find one neat answer, write it down, and be done. Instead I found four competing ideas and a bunch of scientists still arguing about it.

At first that felt disappointing. Then I realised it is actually the most exciting part. Dreams are something every human on Earth experiences every single night, and we still have not fully cracked why. There is a real, unsolved mystery sitting inside your own head right now.

And somebody is going to figure it out eventually. Maybe a scientist who has not been born yet. Or maybe a kid reading this page.
