Why Is the Sky Blue? A Simple Science Explanation for Kids

You can prove this yourself. When sunlight passes through a glass prism, or through raindrops after a storm, the colours split apart and you see a rainbow. The rainbow was always there. It was just mixed together into white light.

And here is the key part: those molecules bounce the short blue waves around way more than they bounce the long red waves. Here is my favourite part of this whole story. If blue light makes the daytime sky blue, why does the sky turn fiery red and orange at sunset?

It is the same science, just with a longer journey. When the Sun is high overhead at noon, sunlight only has to pass through a thin slice of atmosphere to reach your eyes. But when the Sun is low on the horizon at sunrise or sunset, the light has to travel sideways through a much thicker stretch of air.

Over that long journey, almost all the blue light gets scattered away in other directions before it reaches you. What is left over? The long waves. The reds, oranges, and pinks. They pass through the thick air without being bounced away, and they paint the clouds.

So a sunset is not a different kind of light. It is the leftover light after all the blue has been scattered away on its long trip through the air.

Dust, smoke, and pollution in the air can scatter even more light, which is why some of the most colourful, dramatic sunsets happen after volcanic eruptions or wildfires.

Why Is the Sky Black in Space?

Astronauts on the International Space Station see a completely black sky, even when the Sun is shining brightly right at them. Why?

Because there is no air up there. No air molecules means nothing to bounce the light around. The sunlight just travels in a straight line without scattering. So there is no blue glow filling the sky. Just black, with stars poking through.

The same thing happens on the Moon. Even standing in bright sunlight on the Moon, the sky above an astronaut is pitch black. The Moon has almost no atmosphere, so no scattering, so no blue.

What Colour Is the Sky on Mars?

This one really surprised me. On Mars, the daytime sky is usually a dusty butterscotch or reddish-tan colour, because Mars has fine red dust floating in its thin air.

But here is the wild part: Martian sunsets are often blue! It is the reverse of Earth. The dust particles on Mars are just the right size to scatter red light away and let blue light through near the Sun. So a Mars sunset glows blue around the Sun in a reddish sky.

NASA's rovers have actually photographed these blue Martian sunsets. Imagine standing on Mars, watching a blue sunset. That is a real thing that happens on another planet right now.

Why Does the Sky Look Whiter Near the Horizon?

Next time you are outside, look straight up, then look toward the horizon far away. The sky right above you looks a deep, rich blue. But near the horizon it fades to a pale, washed-out blue or even white.

That happens because light coming from near the horizon has passed through much more air. The blue light has been scattered and re-scattered so many times, and mixed with light bouncing off the ground, that all the colours blend back together toward white.
